Bonjour, Guten Tag, Ciao, and basically HI!
The past couple of months life has been crazy. I was working in London and playing in Europe! I will stop there. In Europe beauty is everywhere from the loud streets of London to the romantic hills of Italy to the German towns that surround the majestic Alps. No one can compete with those sights but it is great to be inspired by them. One complaint I heard prior to leaving the States was about how expensive everything is across the pond. And I am not going to lie it is but it is also easy to cut corners and keep your fabulous style. I am going to base everything in London considering that is where I did my major shopping. It is very easy and considerably inexpensive to still maintain whatever beauty regimen you keep in London.
BASICS!!!!
My first issue to tackle is hair. Ladies and Gentlemen DO NOT waste the weight and space in your luggage carrying your favorite styling tools. They may work with a converter they may not. I can not tell you the numerous horror stories of melting flat irons and ruined hair dryers. It is simply not worth it. Especially if you use a Chi, considering that is what I use, the Chi flat iron is specifically designed to work with each individual countries' electricity requirements.
But do not panic yet dear Mavericks! Much like our CVS, Walgreens and other pharmacies The UK has a store similar in fashion called Boots. Everywhere I went there was a Boots within walking distance but the largest Boots in London are located on Oxford Street and at Shepherd's Bush Mall. You can find all the answers to your beauty, hygienic, medication and toiletry needs.
My first week there I went to the Boots on Oxford and bought both my flat iron and blow dryer that were travel friendly! For flat irons they have every price imaginable. Knowing I was most likely going to review it I chose to go with the most inexpensive piece of hardware and just begin there. But there was no beginning because my first CHEAP flat iron did the job! I used the Boots Essentials Ceramic Hair Straightener for £11.99. It worked great for me. Boots also carries multiple brands including Babyliss, Remington, Toni & Guy and Vidal Sasoon. I also bought my hairdryer there and it too was a Boots brand one; Boots Essentials Compact Hair Dryer has the same power of a normal sized hairdryer but it is actually travel size. And it was only £7.99!
Now the plan was to travel from country to country using these items but what I forgot about was that countries in Europe still use various plugs and when I went to Italy I forgot my converter. NO WORRIES! I am not going to tell you to go buy new tools but what I will tell you to do is to stop at the Boots or another pharmacy (they are typically at the airports) and get some haircare products travel size of course. I used either Toni & Guy volume injection shampoo and conditioner or their moisture injection shampoo and conditioner. Both of these smoothed my hair and made my natural curls and waves lovely! I did not need any other products or tools! I just washed my hair and went to sleep.
WHICH SALON IS WHICH?
Getting your haircut! Ahh!!! For a woman giving up that bond with your chosen hairstylist is one of the toughest to break. Even though my beloved hairstylist, who we will call Lady N, and I talked about me cheating on her I still had a hard time committing the deed. In fact when I did go and get my haircut the first time at Zozo's I was extremely disappointed. Granted I was going the cheaper rout by skipping The Toni & Guy experience but I still wanted it done correctly. Me being the paranoid beauty I am, even brought directions Lady N emailed me. I knew how it was suppose to be cut in fact if it weren't for self doubt I could have done it myself but darn those feelings of dread I trudged into the salon and got my haircut by a perfect stranger... YUCK! I was not impressed and it is worse when you know what they are suppose to be doing and you can tell they aren't following the guidelines. I just let the stylist finished and I was later able to work it where it was not so drastic. My second time in the hot seat I went to a beauty school, yes I dared to go cheaper after that situation, in Covent Garden on the recommendation of a friend. The price was perfect and the cut was amazing. What I found out was that hair is just as serious as running the country and the students performing the services have to get so far in school with certain marks before they can even set foot on schools floor. I couldn't have asked for anything better :-)
Beauty Regimen, keep it!
While I was in London I made a list of things I needed and a list of things I could compromise on. For example I made the decision I was not going to compromise on my daily makeup. I use mineral makeup and I feel it is worth it no matter what. So I stocked up before I left that way I would not run out. However if you are looking to buy makeup again Boots is a great source. Keep in mind not all Boots sell the same items. The larger Boots will sell more brands of makeup verses the tiny corner store Boots.
Lines carried at most Boots: No7, 17, Benefit, Bourjois, L'Oreal, Max Factor, Maybelline, and Revlon. The Larger Boots will carry these lines and more in addition to the premium makeup lines like Dior and Chanel.
If Boots does not carry the line you are looking for then go to Selfridges. This store is MASSIVE!!! I loved it and the building on Oxford is simply gorgeous. They were the only store in town that I found who carries Bare Essentials makeup which was even more pricey there than here in the states. I soon realized that it is an American brand which explains the price jump.
I hope that my experience as a world traveller and a beauty enthusiast will help you in the days, weeks, months or even years you spend abroad!
